Wangaratta Creative Precinct

The Wangaratta Creative Precinct brings together the town’s art gallery, performing arts centre, convention centre, and a new contemporary visitor hub into a vibrant and holistic cultural destination. Delivered in partnership with the Rural City of Wangaratta and valued at $25 million, the project expands existing gallery spaces to host permanent and touring exhibitions, public art, and indoor-outdoor experiences in music, art, and film, supported by dedicated education and workshop areas.
Drawing on Wangaratta’s rich textile heritage, the design utilises weaving as a representation for connection, bringing together diverse cultural programs, modern and colonial heritage elements into a living tapestry. At its heart, a central “knot” forms both a symbolic and functional entry to the precinct, linking all elements and providing access to the new contemporary art gallery.
The precinct honours its multi-layered histories, conserving and adapting heritage structures for future generations, while a reimagined landscape reflects its unique location at the confluence of two rivers, an Indigenous birthing site, and acknowledges the legacy of local women whose labour shaped the textile industry. Together, these threads form a bold and distinct regional arts destination serving its growing community.
