Overview

The Narre Warren Emerging Artists Hub reimagines the historic Mechanics Institute hall, a heritage-listed weatherboard structure as a contemporary, inclusive environment for creativity and community. This transformation, situated in the heart of the City of Casey, creates a vital new platform for emerging artists, creatives, and makers to connect, collaborate and grow. establishing a critical piece of Art infrastructure for emerging talent within the community.

Working within the constraints and character of the original building, the design introduces a series of vibrant and playful insertions that enhance functionality while respecting the hall’s cultural and architectural significance. With the interventions are intentionally distinct yet sympathetic, carefully calibrated to preserve the layered history of the site while supporting the diverse needs of the selected and ongoing creative practitioners.

Flexible workspaces are articulated through a series of custom-designed perforated metal screens that act as both spatial dividers and surfaces for display, enabling artists to showcase work in progress and activate the space with their practice. The screens promote moments of visibility and exchange, encouraging connection among artists as well as the wider community.

Through a series of workshops and conversations, the design team worked closely with emerging creatives and representatives from the broader arts community in Casey to develop a space that responds directly to their ambitions, challenges, and aspirations.
The resulting hub is a catalyst for cultural growth, offering emerging artists a supportive environment to experiment, engage and evolve.
