Australia has one of the highest concentrations of international students in higher education in the world. With this influx, Australian universities have increased its duty of care beyond spaces for learning to dedicated spaces for students to socialise. The Overseas Student Services Lounge at Monash University’s Caufield Campus provides a flexible space for the diverse makeup and desires of international students.
Against a monochromatic field, a palette of (red, purple and white) furniture elements reconfigure to accommodate various student activities: film nights, dance rehearsals, meetings and shared meals. Circular geometries accentuate focal points to define places to chatter: this intensity sees the lounge create a strong identity for a highly mobile and fluid population.
