Overview

The refurbishment of the Monash University's Nursing and Midwifery School reconsiders and elevates the existing in-between spaces of a faculty building, which were previously we drab and lifeless. Dedicated social and informal teaching zones are inserted within the corridors to enhance the use of these spaces by both academic staff and students. Each zone, defined by bright colour, offers the opportunity for small tutorials, lectures, study spaces or just spaces to hang-out in.

Circulation space can sometimes be relegated to a secondary consideration in the design of buildings; however, circulation can provide freedoms beyond a freedom of movement. A freedom in circulation can resist reproducing social roles and structures through allowing different people to mix without restrictions. In this project circulation becomes a centre for learning while colour defines spaces of collaboration.
